1. The material
Acrylic and resin trays are the ones we recommend for a domestic bathroom:
- Reinforced sanitary acrylic. Light, warm to the touch and very easy to clean. A surface scratch can be polished out, which is not the case on an enamelled surface.
- Resin or mineral composite. Heavier, with a stone-like feel, good for matt finishes and for cutting to size, but also more expensive and harder to handle in a flat.
- Ceramic. Very hard-wearing, but cold underfoot, heavy, and brittle under a sharp impact.

2. The size
The opening decides the size, not taste. Measure the width and depth at the narrowest point, because in older buildings walls are rarely parallel, and subtract the tiling if it is not yet on.

As a practical guide, below 70 cm of depth a shower is uncomfortable for an adult, and from 120 cm of length you gain enough room for a two-panel screen or an open walk-in entry.
If you are replacing a bathtub, measure the gap it leaves: a 170 cm bath usually allows a 120 cm tray plus a small unit, or a made-to-measure tray using the full length.
3. Non-slip safety
A non-slip finish reduces the risk of slipping when the tray is wet and soapy, which is when it actually matters. It is particularly worth having in a household with children or older people. Bear in mind that a more textured finish grips better and holds slightly more limescale, so it is cleaned more often and with less effort each time.
4. The low-profile format
A low-profile shower tray has a minimal height that allows a flush, step-free entry: more accessible, safer and visually cleaner. It is the preferred option in renovations that replace a bath with a shower.
Its only real requirement is the waste. With less height, the tray leaves less room beneath it for the trap, so check the level of the drainage point before buying. If the existing waste sits too high, the usual solution is to build the floor up slightly or move the drainage point.
The waste and the fall
This is the detail that causes the most trouble afterwards. Check two things: that the waste position on the tray (central or offset) reasonably matches the drainage in your bathroom, and that the installation keeps enough fall to the stack. A properly set tray drains without pooling; one laid without fall leaves a permanent film of water that ends in limescale and staining.
The screen, chosen with the tray
Tray and screen are one assembly. A 70 cm deep tray realistically takes only a fixed or sliding panel; from 80 cm you can use hinged solutions without the door hitting the fitting opposite. Decide both at the same time, because the screen profile sits on the tray rim and the dimensions have to line up.
